Achievements
Whereas the policy of Universal Primary Education has dramatically increased
enrollment, specific categories of children continue to have limited access
to education and drop out rates are high especially for orphans. The
situation is made worse by the quality and relevance of the education
provided in schools. Whereas the government has guaranteed free universal
primary education by exempting children from tuition fees, a number of non
tuition requirement such as building fee, lunch, uniform and scholastic
materials continue to keep children out of school. In some schools children
attend classes under trees or in classes but without desks to sit on. Such a
hostile learning environment can not enable a child to study competitively
like one in first class schools. The result of this has been an increasing
drop out rates especially at the end of the primary level.
Bethesda International supports these children with direct school
sponsorship funding, uniforms, scholastic materials and other school
requirement ( school admission fee, registration fee, blooms, Toilet paper,
etc). These children receive monitoring and career guidance through out
their school life to help them grow and mature.
Presently we have
200 children under this program and with funding, we can do more.
Counseling and career guidance is done continually among the children by
the social support officer and staff. Basically, children come up with problems
e.g. academic issues and
questions, which needed immediate attention. For example rebellion, bad
relationship with others, low self-esteem, changes in development stages,
poor academic performance how to make good decisions and choices for good
future and others.
How ever
some of the other issues and those mentioned above have been solved and
answered through counselling and guidance.
As a result, children learnt the Importance of having a good
relationship with other people, making good choices and decision especially
concerning life and academics. There has also been gradual change in the
behaviors that are unbecoming. Children are studying with a purpose in life
taking education seriously since it is key to their future. Some children
and student have also put copying skills into practice. One of the
challenges that we face in this area is transport means to do more regular
home and school visitations by the social officer and staff.
